Job Title: Research Assistant

This position will be based in the Department of Mental Health Research and report to the Principal Investigator of the Comorbidity Study in Kenya. The appointee will support the Principal Investigator on a day-to-day basis and ensure high-quality and timely field data collection.

Mental Health Innovations and Research (MEHIR) is a consulting firm based in Kenya committed to improving the mental well-being of employees and their management, family and varying communities. MEHIR specialises in corporate wellness, system strengthening and training, mental health research, and psychotherapy services. Our team include experts in clinical and behavioural psychology, substance abuse and drug addiction, trauma, psycho-oncology, adolescents and youth mental health, research, project management, and program evaluation.

MEHIR is seeking Research Assistants (RAs) for a study on substance abuse comorbidity with mental disorders among emerging adults. The RA will collect data on substance use and mental disorders in the Mombasa (4), Kilifi (3), and Kwale (3) counties. The successful candidates should be highly motivated individuals with expertise and experience in collecting behavioural or health-related data and should be residents of the said counties.

Contract Period:

This is a one-month short-term contract.

Required Qualifications:

  • Degree or Diploma in clinical psychology, counselling psychology or a relevant behavioural discipline including social sciences or equivalent




  • Experience in the collection and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data (focus group discussions, in-depth interviews, and key informant interviews)




  • A minimum of two years of working experience in collecting field data in behavioural psychology or the health sector, especially in the substance abuse field, is highly desirable




  • The successful candidate must be experienced in using electronic data collection tools




  • They must possess knowledge of research on human subjects and related research ethical issues.

Competencies and skills:

    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills




    • Ability to work independently and adhere to timelines




    • Ability to interact with study participants in physical and virtual settings




    • Familiarity with electronic data collection tools i.e ODK, is an added advantage




    • Ability to manage multiple activities and achieve set deadlines




    • Strong attention to detail and writing skills that should include the ability to develop comprehensive notes and reports during qualitative data collection and analysis
